2010 Association of Alumni Executive Committee Candidates

Alan R. Orschel ’61
Petition Nominated Candidate for Executive Committee

Biography
Alan graduated cum laude and worked for The Dartmouth and the Aegis. He edited the Class of 1961 25th reunion yearbook. After earning his law degree from the University of Chicago, Alan joined a prominent Chicago firm, eventually serving as co-managing partner. Since retirement, Alan has been affiliated with a boutique M & A firm to develop business transactions.

Alan has been a tireless Dartmouth fundraiser for 40 years, nurturing a $1.5 million gift to the College. He is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and the Dartmouth Lawyers Association. Alan was President of the Board of St. Francis Xavier School, and led the Bureau on Jewish Employment Problems.

Statement
I adopt the statement of J. Michael Murphy and urge the election of our entire Dartmouth United slate.

My career has allowed me to closely observe the functioning of many corporate and nonprofit Boards. Self-selecting Boards can become self-involved and lose their focus. Dartmouth’s Board of Trustees must be periodically refreshed from without if it is to remain connected with the real world.

Dartmouth’s stunning twentieth-century success can be traced to our alumni’s ability to select half of the College’s Trustees. The 2007 action to dilute the power of alumni Board members threatens Dartmouth’s long-term success. I will use all my skills to negotiate a return to parity.
